Artist Biography
Shayla Rose Povoas is Kamloops-based multimedia artist, who earned her Bachelor of Science in Animal Biology (2024) alongside a Bachelor of Fine Arts in visual art (pending, 2025). A Bachelor of Fine Arts allowed Shayla to develop knowledge and skills while participating in various group exhibitions at the TRU Art Gallery. Shayla has combined her knowledge of science with art to create works that bring to light the relationships between humans, nature, and art through the use of different media including drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, mixed media, and digital art.
Shayla is influenced stylistically in painting by impressionist painters like Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, and Paul Signac as well as more contemporary artists such as Dimitri Milan, Laura Fog Frede, and Alexandra Demers among many others. Various aspects of nature can be seen throughout her works with flowers and plants being one of her main subjects.
Artist Statement
The relationship between nature and art is explored through the use of different art mediums and styles. My work examines relationships in nature and between mediums using printmaking, drawing and painting. I am interested in how different mediums influence how the subject is perceived, which can be seen as I explore the same subject in different mediums and how the subject can become a part of the process in creating each work. Working in etching produces images where the subject, plants and flowers gathered from nature, are a key part in the physical process by using the impression of the subject to create an image as well as in silk screen where the plant is used directly in the creative process creating an image that resembles a photogram. Working in acrylic painting using an abstract approach to the subject draws attention to how information about nature is perceived. I creates abstract paintings by using fake plants and flowers as replacements for brushes, while textures and images are used to create captivating backgrounds as the base of realistic portraits of nature.
